Temple Visits near Lakhe

Vimla's Village Photos

More photos from our overnight at Vimla's village.  By the way, this was the night of the US Presidential Election, so all night long I was anxious to hear the results. In the morning after we went to the temple, we got back and had breakfast and then I got the call from Mom telling me that BARACK WON!!  Then I got texts from my Rachel Didi and Grace and a phone call from my host family in Jaipur!

Photos 1-3: Me in Rajasthani dress Photo 4: Me with Vimla's family: Vimla, Jyoti, Preeti, Deepti, Ajay and Chhoti Photo 5: Me with Vimla's mother, father, and brother in law and a cousin of the family

Vimla's Village: First Visit

On our third day in Jaisalmer we went to Vimla's village, Lakhe, to talk with some women and also to meet her family.  These are some pics from our time there. We feel in love with the family and have already been back to visit again.  We stayed overnight, they dressed me up in Rajasthani fashion, we met lots of relatives and neighbors, visited a famous temple in the morning, and slept under the stars.  It was a GREAT time.  There are a lot of photos!

Photo 1: kids in front of the beautiful sun set after playing freeze tag together with Erik and I (we were extremely out of breath from the game-we realized how OLD we are!) on the sand hills Photos 2: a really nice neighborhood boy Photo 3: Vimla-ji in her garden Photo 4: Vimla's father-in-law Photo 5: two of Vimla's kids and some neighbor kids in front of Vimla's house

First two photos are photos of the view from our rooftop.  Then a GREAT picture of Vimla-ji that Erik took at a field visit.  Then two pics of friends that Erik and I made on a bus ride the other day.  We got placed up in the front cab of the bus and so we chatted with the driver and another guy up in the cab of the bus.  Both guys were OBAMA supporters!

Photos!

Some pictures from our time with Urmul.  The first two are photos of our first day of field visiting at Chandan: Vimla is on the left and Maya (the women's group leader of the village-who I mentioned in a past post).  The second photo is one of the women who works at the Children's Center in Chandan with a baby girls whose birth was CELEBRATED!  Then a photo of Erik and I in the front of a bus, then a great sign that Erik and I found our first day in Jaislamer, and then finally a photo from the vegetable market where we buy our veggies everyday.

Vanessa Visits!

Vanessa Shafa (who I studied abroad with in Central America fall semester 2006) is living in South India and she is traveling around North India right now and came to Jaisalmer with her friend, Frank!  It is great to see her! We figured out that we have now been in six countries together: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, USA, and India! We took Frank and Vanessa with us on a field visit today and then went to the sand dunes and rode camels!

Jaisalmer

The first day we got to Jaisalmer, Vuta Ram and Maga Ram took Erik and I to visit the famous haveli here.  They charge foreigners 50 rupees to go inside and then more money for taking photos.  But we said no to the fees and just sat around.  Then Vuta Ram and Maga Ram were like okay, its cool, they said you can go inside, so we did-free of charge, and we took pictures too!  And the last picture of Maga-Ram and Erik is right outside of our office!
